Beau and Henry were first recommended to me by the editor of Velvet Magazine. They were planning on running a feature showcasing their carnival themed wedding, and needed some amazing wedding photos to illustrate the day.
As soon as we met it was obvious that Henry and Beau were both very creative. They were planning something really special, and as Beau reeled off a list of her carnival themed wedding ideas I was feeling more and more excited.

A small ceremony at Sheene Mill

The day started at Sheene Mill, where Beau and Henry had an intimate ceremony for close friends and family. Beau did all the flowers for the day herself. These were beautifully co-ordinated with Hotel Chocolat wedding favours.

Henry looked amazing in a bright red suit and customised button hole. This consisted of a a daushound ( of which they have 2) and Homer Simpson! They have three dogs in total, Nacho, Chopper and Arnie (Henry’s a big Arnie fan), and of course they were all in attendance. In suits. Yes, this wedding had dogs in suits! (as any good carnival themed wedding should)  To be fair, they didn’t last long, but I have the photos to prove it!

After the ceremony and and wedding breakfast, the newly wed couple stayed behind for a photo shoot in the beautiful gardens of Sheene Mill. Beau made for an absolutely stunning bride in her white and pink dip dyed wedding dress, complimented with Vivienne Westwood shoes! The dogs got involved and we ended up with some really fun and creative wedding photos. With these guys it was all about a fun and relaxed approach.

Carnival Time!

The 2nd part of the day was where things got a little crazy. A carnival themed wedding really needs a carnival, and where better than your own back garden? In this case the back garden was a huge field, but you get the idea..

So as I arrive I can see a massive red and blue stripped big top on the brow of a hill. A huge crowd is gathered and the music is pumping. Looking round things get even more awesome. At the bottom of the hill is a full size fairground carousel and dodgems! Oh, and a candy floss machine and hot dog stall for good measure.

Just then the guy’s rock up in the wedding car, a vintage Dodge charger! This was such an epic scene and an opportunity that I couldn’t miss. A few hours later I stood them by the car and shot a series of amazing wedding photos as the sun was setting, the type of creative wedding photography that I love.

Super Wedding Ideas + World’s coolest couple = Amazing Wedding Photos

Beau had really gone to town bringing her carnival themed wedding ideas to life.  She had personally sculpted a pair of 10ft tall fibreglass gargoyles, created fantastic paper mache carnival themed table decorations and a myriad of other circus and carnival inspired touches. The guests also chipped in with some unique wedding presents. A custom made Batman wood burner. A bespoke latex Arnie mask. Incredible stuff!

Let Me Entertain You!

The entertainment came thick and fast! There was never a dull moment. Fairground rides, stilt walkers, fire eaters, fireworks, two bands and a flambouyant first dance, it was non stop action. Speaking of bands, Henry is in his own heavy metal band and this was the theme of the evening entertainment..

A Whole Lotta DC..

…provided the musical back drop for the nights festivities, a cover band of AC/DC, and I was seriously impressed. The night was like a full on rave and everyone was absolutely loving it! I came away with some of the most amazing wedding photos I’ve taken, but then this was the most amazing wedding I’ve been to.

When the groom ends up on the best mans shoulders, with a KFC bucket on his head, and a man with a guitar is getting naked on stage, you know its been a good one…..

I first met Matt and Bronwen in late 2016. We had arranged to meet up and discuss their Chippenham Park wedding photography at the venue,  which is a beautiful country house wedding venue in Cambridgeshire. Like a lot of couples they weren’t 100% confident with having their photo taken. I recommended a pre-wedding shoot and this proved to be really useful. We got some great pictures and more importantly we got to know each other. This meant that on the day everyone was feeling confident and relaxed.

Getting ready…

Bronwen decided to get ready at the Rosewood Pavillion, another wedding venue in Chippenham. I actually live in the village, so a Chippenham Park wedding is ideal for me!
I arrived and was delighted to see make up artist Dani Roberts. She’s always fantastic to work with! She had positioned Brownen right next to the window. This is the perfect place for getting lovely images with natural light.

I set about shooting lots of natural, relaxed photos of the bridal prep, I also like to take time at this point to chat and get to know everyone. It really helps later in the day, making everyone feel at ease.

Onward to Chippenham Park..

Bronwen and her bridesmaids drove to Chippenham Park to make their final preparations. Here in the bridal suite I was able to capture a lovely image of her wedding dress, as well as other details such as her perfume and wedding shoes.

An outdoor ceremony..

There are loads of options when it comes to your Chippenham Park wedding ceremony, with 3 outdoor locations to choose from. Bronwen and Matt chose to tie the knot in the pergola, which sits just in front of the main house. The ceremony was beautiful and made extra special by her brother and sister, who both sang.

Gorgeous gardens!

Chippenham Park is well known for it’s gardens. They offer a whole range of photo options and I was keen to take advantage.  My style mixes natural images, with more dynamic, creative photography.  With this in mind we took a walk and tried a whole range of different ideas, with my 2nd photographer on hand capture different angles.  Matt and Bronwen were having a great time, and felt really relaxed in front of the lens. This definitely helped me to shoot some wonderful natural reactions between them, and capture their true personalities. I also had a brilliant time!

First Dance, LOVE on the dance floor!

Light up letters have been really popular at weddings this year, and Matt and Bronwen went for LOVE. The lovely Lucie from Easy and Elegant Weddings provided these, and comes highly recommended! The first dance was spectacular and Matt’s footwork was impressive.

Dance all Night!

As always I was on hand to capture all the dancing right up until midnight. The action was relentless and it has to be said, these guys didn’t let me down. There was the classic “Wedding Worm” (think break dancing), a conga and even a pole dancing dance off!

Last Summer I was contacted by Josh regarding his and Suzie’s wedding. They were due to be married at the Granary Barns in Wooditton, Suffolk. As the recommended wedding photographer at the Granary Barns I’m always happy to shoot there, and suggested to Josh that we meet up for a chat to go through some options.  When I met Josh and Suzie for the first time I instantly knew that they were my kind of couple. We really hit it off, cracking jokes and having a great laugh. They also stressed how important the photographs were to them and we instantly started sharing some ideas via pinterest.

Another Amazing Wedding Venue …

On the morning of the wedding Suzie and her bridesmaids had decided to get ready at Swynford Manor. This was a new venue for me and I was amazed at how opulent and stylish the rooms were. This made for some absolutely gorgeous shots of the girls and a cracking start to the day. I also managed to capture the bride’s priceless reaction as she opened a pre wedding gift from the groom. A stunning pair of red, yellow and blue LouBoutins later and we had one very happy lady.

On to the Granary Barns …

With everyone ready and looking their best, it was down to Suzie’s Dad to provide transportation to the venue. His Range Rover Evoque was more than up to the task, especially with the custom number plate of #CLEARSONS. I quickly sped on ahead to grab some photos of them arriving. As I turned in to Parsonage Farm Lane, flanked by fields of golden wheat and green hedgerows,  I had a feeling that this was going to be a really special day. As it turned out I wasn’t wrong!

An Intimate Ceremony in the Flint Barn …

The Granary Estates has two options for your wedding ceremony, the main Granary Barns or the smaller, more intimate Flint Barn.  Josh and Suzie’s guests were already seated in the Flint Barn and as I walked in Josh was beaming ear to ear, sharing a joke with his best man, Gary.  I quickly settled in to position and 20 minutes later the registrar was handing over the marriage license to the newlywed couple.  I managed to get a really lovely natural photograph of the bride and groom exiting back down the aisle. Josh hadn’t stopped smiling, and they later made this one in to their thank you card..

Balloons…£30 a POP!

After some fun group shots I took Josh and Suzie out in to the grounds of the Granary Barns for some couple portraits. As a wedding photographer I’m always looking for new ideas and Josh and Suzie were really involved in this process. They had some definite ideas of what they wanted and had brought some large white balloons along as props. All was going well with these until the wind caught one and before we knew it we were a balloon, and £30, down.

We were really lucky that in July the fields behind the Granary Barns are full of corn, and this made a really rustic, romantic backdrop.

LOVE… 5ft tall!!

As a lazy Summer’s day began to fade in to a beautiful summers evening, the bride and groom took to the dance floor. Suzie had styled her day superbly and another great touch were the 5ft tall light up letters spelling out LOVE. These provided the backdrop to their first dance and described it perfectly. And if LOVE was the perfect word for the first dance, a 10ft tall CRAZY summed up the rest of the night nicely…

Dancing the Night Away

I’ve photographed a lot of Granary Barns weddings and I can honestly say that I’ve never seen a party like this! I always stay late at weddings, usually until the end. I think a lot of the best snaps are taken when people have had a few drinks, and this wedding definitely proved my theory. I’ve even got the photos to prove it! A box of props next to the dance floor fueled the “bants”, and with the help of my able assistant, Barry Stingmore of Shuttermore Photography, we captured a number of unforgettable moments. The bride and groom crowd surfing and fighting with foam pirate swords was one of my favs!

Also a mention to Dreamwave Events for some outstanding Kisstory style dance tunes that kept the party pumping, highly recommended!

This wedding was my first of 2014 and special for a number of reasons.  Soushila’s brother Gavin is a close friend of mine, and after he put me in touch with her and Matt we met up to discuss their wedding day. Once I had heard their plans I knew it would be a great opportunity to take some awesome shots. I also knew it would be a challenge, as Soushi is  5ft 5 and Matt is  6ft 4! The venue they chose was the lovely Batch Country House in Somerset, in Lymphsam near Weston Super Mare. I hadn’t visited this part of the country before, but I have to say, its absolutely stunning and the perfect setting for a country wedding. Matt and his family are from the nearby village of Wrington, which is a beautifully picturesque, and the local church, All Saints, was where the ceremony was to be held.

An early start..

However, the day started with bridal prep back at Batch Country House, which I was on hand to capture. Once complete, I set off just before Soushi and the girls to shoot some images of Matt at All Saints, where he was nervously waiting. When Soushi arrived in her vintage car she looked absolutely stunning, and throughout the ceremony she didn’t stop smiling. Afterwards the newlyweds made their exit and this was the perfect time to capture some relaxed natural images, as friends and family gathered to congratulate them. It was now time  for me to travel back to Batch Country House and await Matt and Soushi’s arrival in a horse drawn carriage. This was followed by group photo’s on the  lawn, and coming from a large Mauritian family it was important to Soushi that every family member was captured. This is where a traditional English and Mauritian Wedding may differ. Normally I shoot around 8-12 group shots, but on this occasion there were 46, and being the longest and hottest day of the year it was quite a task. However, with some help from Gavin, and my assistant Ben, we got the shots done and managed to have some laughs along the way. The wedding breakfast followed and afterward I took Matt and Soushi out in to the beautiful grounds to capture some couple portraits. I’d already scouted out some locations and were able to get a variety of images in a short space of time.

A Mauritian Twist

Heading inside I set up my lights for the first dance, and by using off camera flash I was able to take some really stunning first dance wedding photographs.  Soushi had earlier informed me that after the first dance there would be some traditional Mauritian wedding entertainment known as Sega dancing. My initial thoughts conjured images of Sonic the Hedgehog doing the Cha Cha, but this, as you may imagine, was far from the truth. In fact Sega dancing involves a man banging a wooden drum whilst three agile young ladies twist and gyrate in a fusion of flamenco and salsa. Not a hedgehog in sight…. With the party well and truly underway, and the sun sliding slowly toward the Somerset horizon, it was the perfect time of day for the style of romantic wedding photography that I love to produce. With that in mind we headed off once  again for some couple portraits in a different area of the gardens. At this time of day, with the sun setting, the sky was really colourful and dramatic, and this allowed us to shoot some amazing images. Back inside everyone was having a really great time, with the photobooth proving particularly popular. There were also some legendary and gravity defying dance moves being pulled out the bag, and a fantastic array of foods laid out for the evening buffet. As usual, I provided all day coverage and stayed until midnight, capturing the fun and craziness as it happened. An amazing wedding from start to finish!

Every once in a while I get to photograph a wedding that is not only beautiful, but also truly unique. When Sarah-Jane and Eugene booked me to photograph their wedding at Smeetham Hall Barn, I knew it would be something really special.

Sarah-Jane has an amazing eye for design and detail, and she really expressed this in her styling, inspired by her love of the 1930’s and 40’s.

A Perfect Venue

Originally built in the 16th Century, Smeetham Hall Barn sits in the beautiful grounds of Smeetham Hall. Two miles from Sudbury it really is one of the best barn style wedding venues in Essex and as a photographer its a delight to shoot at. This was my first time shooting a wedding at Smeetham Hall Barn, and I was excited to say the least.

The Good Fellas

Upon arriving at the Mill Hotel in Sudbury  I made my way to Eugene’s room, where he was getting ready with the groomsmen and best man Jimmy.

The guys were just putting on their suits and Eugene looked the epitome of 1940’s style in his crushed black velvet suit with pink bow tie.

Sarah had also sent him a gift of an inscribed gold pocket watch which rounded off his ensemble perfectly.

A Sweet set of Wheels

Transport to the wedding venue was courtesy of a chauffeur driven Hillman Minx, which perfectly suited Sarah-Jane and her stunning bridesmaids. As it arrived they made their way to the rear of the barn to complete final preparations and quelle last minute nerves.

A Beautiful Dame..

Sarah-Jane looked incredible in her dress, which she had designed and made herself, along with several accessories that completed her 1930’/40’s vintage look. Her hair and make up, done by the talented Chelsea Lenton, were also perfect and all combined to make Sarah-Jane look truly beautiful.

After the ceremony we went outside in to the glorious Suffolk sunshine. Here we took some lovely group shots mixing traditional and modern posing, and as always we had some laughs along the way. The dress code was black and white, and everyone really made an effort to look their best. They also made my job easy by being really friendly and laid back, a real pleasure to work with.

Next came a couple portrait session with Sarah-Jane and Eugene. I took them in to the grounds of Smeetham Hall to capture some soft and natural romantic shots, and some more posed, contemporary style images.

40’s style

The wedding breakfast was held in the main barn and the table decoration and attention to detail was amazing. Photographs of 30’and 40’s screen icons adorned the table cloth along with pink butterflies and roses, vintage teacups, and personalised menus and  wine.

A Beautiful First Dance

After some heart felt and emotional speeches the tables were cleared away and the evening guests began to arrive. This led to the cutting of the cake, followed by an enchanting first dance to John Legends “All of Me”. It was a beautiful moment that really captured the love that Sarah-Jane and Eugene have for each other, and the perfect expression of everything that the day had been.

Thanks to Mr and Mrs Hector for letting me part of your wonderfully unique wedding. You truly make a stunning couple and I wish you every happiness in the world.

The day itself got off to an early start, with my second shooter and wingman, Blondie Photography meeting me at 9 am. Jenni and her bridesmaids were getting ready at Rowhill Grange Hotel in Wilmington, where we arrived just before 10. After a quick look around the grounds we went up to her room. She’d stayed there with her bridesmaids the night before and there were several tell tale signs of a girly night in. DVD’s, champagne and the remains of a full English were all evident and the bridal prep was in full flow, with the make up artist and hair stylist doing their thing. At this point in the day I generally hang back and capture reportage style images, documenting things as they unfold. The very talented Sarah Anne Duncan, who was doing Jenni’s make up, had cleverly positioned her next to a large window, allowing me to take some beautifully lit natural light portraits.

After spending a couple of hours photographing Jenni and the girls, Tim left to grab some images of the guys getting ready at Addington Palace. Meanwhile I got Jenni and her bridesmaids together for some fun group shots, and then took some individual bridal portraits of Jenni, who looked absolutely stunning. A special mention goes to one of the bridesmaids, Rebecca, who doubled up as my assistant and did a great job of holding the reflector.

We departed in the wedding car, a vintage Rolls Royce, and after a short drive we arrived at Addington Palace. It’s an absolutely amazing venue and the ceremony was conducted in a room with a huge window facing the couple, which provided perfect lighting.

Afterwards everyone headed outside in to the glorious Summer sunshine for a champagne reception, followed by the formal group shots. This gave me the chance to try out a few fun ideas with the brides and ushers. All of them were really up for it and we had a great time.

The wedding breakfast was next and as deserts were being served I took a moment to take Jon and Jenni aside for some portraits I had planned.  There are so many great locations and opportunities for an Addington Palace wedding photographer to take advantage of. I loved shooting beauitiful, romantic photography at Addington Palace, and its the sort of venue that really suits my style. On this occasion we worked our way around the main staircase, using the huge glass roof dome as a feature.  Jenni had also requested a Cinderella style shot with her shoes, so I set this up on the stairs and you can see the result in the images below.

After dinner the whole bridal party slipped away for the final rehearsal of a special surprise dance routine they had planned. This was held in an absolutely stunning period room and I was able shoot some more portraits, as well as some off the cuff images of a bridesmaid pillow fight that broke out whilst I was doing so, definitely a first for me!

A short while later the first dance began. After a very traditional ballroom style start, quite befitting of the Great  Hall which has played host to BBC 1’s Come Dancing, Jon and Jenni were suddenly joined on the floor by the bridal party. What followed was an absolute dance extravaganza, ranging from Grease to Run DMC and everything in between. Definitely one of the best first dances I’ve seen and one I’ll never forget.

However, it turned out that this was merely a warm up as the craziest dance moves were yet to come, and for the next few hours the dance floor was well and truly rocked.

I often stay late at the weddings I shoot, as I believe that some of the best images are captured when people loosen up and let their hair down, and I wasn’t disappointed.

As the night drew to a close at around 1:00 am, Jon and Jenni made their way to the driveway where their car, family and friends awaited. A perfect day finally ended with a perfect farewell.

It was an absolute pleasure to be a part of their wonderful Addington Palace Wedding and I wish them a long and beautiful life together.

Each day was split in to five time slots, with each offering a choice of up to 8 different topics and speakers. To be honest the hardest part was deciding which to attend, and the term “like a kid in a sweet shop” definitely sprang to mind. In the end  I attended over  35 hrs of classes covering subjects ranging from sales and marketing to photoshop and lighting. I wont list them all but here are some of my favourites-

One Light Madness by Dave Montizambert – Ok, it wasn’t that mad, but I learnt alot about studio lighting and Daves knowledge was immense, definitely a topic I will pursue further this year.
Taking that Image to the Next Stage with  Sofie Louca and Paul Karaolides – A really talented husband and wife team based in Greece. They came across as really nice people and gave us some practical guidelines on how they edit their shots in Photoshop. What they taught me will completely change how I retouch my shots and its exactly the sort of input I wanted. Sofie also took time to comment on my facebook photography page, which I really appreciated. Thanks guys 🙂

The Pre-Wedding Shoot  with Michael Turner – I’m starting to do pre-wedding shoots with all my weddings this year and thought that this class would be a great way to brush up my skills. Not only did I get some great tips, but I also got a chance to get chatting with Michael and his wife Janet, and Karrie, who works for Turner Photo Training( definitely recomended). After mentioning that it was my first time at the convention they were kind enough to invite me to sit at their table at the awards dinner ( more on that later ) All three of them are lovely people and Michael has a calm and understated way of working that makes him a great teacher.

Successful Image and Marketing with Shirenn Hammond –  Shireen has a beautiful personality and approach that really shines through. She took the time to come and say hello to me before the class began and I think that really sums up her approach to photography and business.

Finally, after a tiring  but inspirational four days, it was Sunday evening and time for the awards dinner. The awards are given as the finale of the Societies annual photographic competition which takes place throughout the year. Members are invited each month to enter one photograph in up to  34 catagories, ranging from Advertising to Wildlife, as well as four wedding and five portrait catagories. A distinguised panel of judges then award each image either unclassified, bronze, silver or gold awards. From the gold awards a small number are nominated in each catagory for the respective Photographer of the Year Award, and there is also an Overall Photographer of the Year, chosen from 17500 entries. As I mentioned on my Facebook page ,  I was lucky enough be nominated for The Wildlife Photographer of Year for my image, Dark Hare. (copies can be purchased here)

I was accompanied to the awards by my beautiful wife Andrea, who looked stunning as usual. I sometimes forget just how gorgeous she is. She is a great mum to our daughter Giselle, and completely supportive of my photography, which takes up alot of time. At the end of the day its only worth doing if they are there to share it with me, and I hope I can make them both proud. I love you both xx.

Philipa Forrester was the presenter and with each award the nominees were shown on a large projector. This was the view from our table –

Sitting to our left were Kaz and the Turners and to the right were Steve Allen and his wife Pauline. After ten minutes of chatting to Steve, I asked him what type of photography he does, and it turns out that he is a top travel and wildlife stock photographer, having traveled to over 80 countries. Steve was kind enough to answer a multitude of questions that I fired at him and I really enjoyed talking to him.
So eventually the nominees of the wildlife catagory were announced and as my heart raced the winner was announced – Pete Denness!!. I was totally amazed and so so happy. As I went up to collect the award, Kaz managed to grab some footage
What I hadn’t realised is that both Michael Turner and Steve Allen are part of the judging panel, and had known all along that I had won! I honestly didn’t have a clue, and was totally baffled when Steve presented me with the award – ( That cheesy grin was stuck to my face all night, serious cheek ache!)

I didn’t think that the night could get any better, but then came the Overall Winner. As the 3rd place joint winners were read out I was sipping a glass of Chablis and still trying to take it all in when I heard my name again!! I was literally stunned and it took a few seconds for me to get up. As the the table erupted in celebration ( and thanks to all the guys for your support), I made my way to the stage. On the way I met joint winner, Paul Bucknall, who was kind enough to let me go up first and collect the award. Paul’s photograph, which won the open catagory was brilliant, and I feel very privilaged to share the award with him.

The rest of the evening was spent with Kaz and the Turners, dancing the night away whilst talking cockney rhyming slang, doing various regional walks and debating the merits of Lord of the Rings vs Harry Potter….. Really lovely people and new friends made 🙂

The Societies Convention was one of the best weeks of my life and an amazing start to 2012. I got to meet some brilliant photographers, made some great friends and now feel ready to take my photography to the next level. Thanks to all the speakers, volunteers, models and organisers who made this fantastic event possible, I’ll see you all again next year 😉
